The White Pine Weevil: Biology, Damage and Management

چکیده
A retrospective study was conducted in 1993 which quantified the effectsof overstoryshading on both spruce weevil, Pissodes strobi (Peck) damage, and leader growth oninterior white spruce, Picea g/auca(Moench) Voss x engelmannii (Parry ex Englem.).The study was undertaken inthe Prince George and Cariboo Forest Regionsof BritishColumbia where the weevil is causing extensive damage toplantations of interiorwhite spruce. Shading on the spruce trees was measured bycalculating the LightInterception Index (Delong 1991) and percent overstory cover onindividual whitespruce trees at the center of a2.52 m radius plot. Current weevilattacks decreasedsignificantly with increasing overstory cover. Shading also decreased leader growth. These results indicate thathe optimum level of overstory removal maybe acompromise between volumeloss due to overstory competition and volumegain dueto decreased weevil attacks.

The white pine weevil, Pissodes strobi Peck (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a serious forest pest in young pine and spruce plantations in much of Canada and the northern US (Mitchell et al., 1990; Alfaro et al., 1995). Adults emerge in early spring to begin feeding and egg laying in the secondary phloem of the1-year-old terminal leader of young trees (Silver, 1968). Upon hatching, larvae mine d...

(Coleoptera, Curculionidae) can be a major problem when regenerating with conifer seedlings in large parts of Europe. Weevils feeding on the stem bark of newly planted seedlings often cause high mortality in...

Light is a major environmental factor that may determine the interaction between plants and herbivores in several ways, including top-down effects through changes in herbivore behavior and bottom-up effects mediated by alterations of plant physiology. Here we explored the relative contribution of these two regulation processes to the outcome of the interaction of pine trees with a major forest ...

White pine weevil (Pissodes strobi, Peck.) is a native forest insect pest in the Pacific Northwest of North America that attacks species of spruce (Picea spp.) and pine (Pinus spp.). Young Sitka spruce [Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.] trees are particularly susceptible to weevil attack. Pockets of naturally occurring Sitka spruce resistance have been identified in high weevil hazard areas in co...
